Halton Hills Public Library
Discover the history behind street names in Halton Hills.
Kennedy Street: Members of the Kennedy family were some of the first settlers in the area that is now Georgetown.
George Street: George Kennedy, for whom Georgetown is named, opened his mill in 1823 and began the establishment of the town. He was born in 1799 and died in 1879.
Sarah Street: Sarah (Bedford) Kennedy was the wife of George Kennedy. She was born in 1798 and died in 1875.
John Street: There were two John's in the Kennedy family for whom this street could be named, with different sources pointing to either the father or the son. John Kennedy Sr. was born in 1761 and died in 1847. He and his first wife, Charity, were the parents of George, John and Morris Kennedy, who were the founders of Georgetown. His son, John, was born in 1787 and died in 1874, and could also have named this street after himself as he was part of the group that surveyed Georgetown in its early days.
Morris Street: Morris Kennedy was the son of John and Charity Kennedy. He was born in 1794 and died in 1870. He married his wife, Sarah Tavers, in 1815 and together they had 11 children. Morris became a minister and helped establish the first church in Georgetown.
Charity Street: Charity was the first wife of John Kennedy Sr., born in 1761 and died in 1800. She was the mother of George, John and Morris.
Harriet Street: Harriet was the daughter of George and Sarah Kennedy. She is said to have been the first European-settler child born in Georgetown.
